The Empire style was developed in France during Napoleon's reign. The style caught on in both England and the United States by about 1800 or so. In the US, Duncan Phyfe was perhaps the most well known practitioner. Here in the states today, Hepplewhite, Federal, and Empire hardware are all part of the same style and are quite interchangeable.
