Our catalog photographer, John Giammatteo, used our pintle hinges on his barn doors. Please take a look at the doors and hinges on his very large doors.
  • Strap hinges are available in 3 widths: 1-1/2", 2" and 2-1/2". The HF-40 hinges on this page are the 1-1/2" wide and are the standard size. The appropriate length is determined by the width of the door. The strap length needs to be at least 2/3 of the width of the door. We keep 4 lengths, 3 widths, 3 patterns, and 2 thicknesses on hand. Why choose one over the other? Well, part of the reason is regional. In New England, straps were usually 1-1/2" wide, because we New Englanders were frugal with our iron. Large barn doors had wider straps, of course. In the south, 2" wide is more common, and as you move west, straps get wider. Folks in California often use 2-1/2" wide straps.
  • There are other reasons, too. 2" and 2-1/2" wide straps are made from thicker iron: 1/4" instead of 3/16". Do you have questions? Orion can help you choose the appropriate width, thickness and pintle size. Just give him a call (800-754-9127) or contact him by email (orion@horton-brasses.com) to discuss your project!

HF-36: driven pintles - Driven pintles were frequently used in the 1700's; but jamb mounted pintles are more common today. The down side of using driven pintles in wood is that you have only one chance for perfect alignment. The driven part is barbed, and if you place it wrong (the pin is crooked one way or another) or in the process you hit an old nail or a knot; there is no turning back. I often recommend the use of driven pintles in masonry, because cementing them into place is a reliable method of installation.

HF-37: jamb-mounted pintle - Jamb mounted pintles are used for many kinds of applications. They are mortised into the jamb as any butt hinge is, and I recommend them highly for most installations. We can also make the jamb plate any size you need. Supplied with 2-1/4" long black flat head screws.
