Snipe hinges were used on blanket chests, before the more common hinges with barrels and pins were used. The small snipe, which we call the baby snipe, could be found on bible boxes. The strap hinge shown here is a very fine reproduction of an old one, complete with dovetail ends. It hinges on the inside of the chest.
