Door butt hinges were common in the 19th century, and generally were available in two styles: lift off and regular. Made of cast iron, they were heavy and supportive, but very brittle. Over time, they cracked and toay, there are far more broken cast iron hinges than there are intact ones.
We dont' want our reproduction door butt hinges to have the same failings as period cast iron hinges, so we do it a little differently. We start with strong, commercial hinges made of modern steel. Next we remove that ugly zinc coating. Then we rework them in a coal forge, where we add beveled edges, texture and a hand worked finish. The blackened oil finish looks well aged and blends with period furnishings very nicely.
Other sizes can be made to order, and special hole placements is available. Lift off butt hinges offer an unusual feature: doors can be easily lifted off the hinge pin.
