Once, every city had an Odeon cinema as a feature of its landscape. In just 10 years between the founding of the chain in Birmingham and founder Oscar Deutsch's death in 1941, 258 Odeon cinemas opened throughout Britain, more than half of them in new buildings. With their cloud-piercing towers and sweeping lines, Odeons were a promise of the shapes of things to come.
