The dark appearance and angular look of wrought iron door hardware hints at an earlier time in American history when brass hardware could not be made in the colonies. Doors, cabinets, and furniture from or replicating this period in time benefit from hand-forged, or wrought, iron hardware created by Horton Brasses. If you are creating such a piece or restoring one from centuries ago, you will find Horton Brasses' wrought iron door hardware not only mimics the appearance but retains the durable and dependable design.

All of our authentic and original iron hardware is forged by hand and captures period details. Our smiths, additionally, do not stick with a group of design templates. If you have a particular design for hardware in mind, contact us about creating custom work.

Hand Forged Iron Hinges

Our hand forged black iron hinges are perfect for cabinetry, built-ins, media centers, and barn doors. Hand forged in a traditional manner with a coal forge, anvil, and hammer, these wrought iron hinges are each truly a work of art. H & HL Hinges

H and HL hinges were used on all types of interior doors in colonial homes. HL & H hinges are perfectly suited for closet doors, passage doors, and pantry doors. I have even seen them on large media cabinets.

These wrought iron door hinges are fully hand made in a coal forge. The edges are beveled and the texture and quality of the forge is very evident. Linseed oil is allowed to penetrate the iron and the resulting color is a natural, dark hue that shows the hand work well.

H and HL hinges are surface mounted with black pyramid head screws, which are included. We can also make special sizes or hole configurations. Contact us for pricing and additional information.

Door Strap Hinges

The ideal length for strap hinges is 2/3 of the width of the door or more. Many old Connecticut houses have straps that go to within an inch of the other edge! These hinges can be surface mounted or jamb mounted, and instructions and screws for either application come with each order.

HF-15 hinges can be made in other lengths, just tell us what you need in the special instructions section during selection. A price adjustment will be made of $10.00 per inch and we will send you a confirming email with the estimated ship date.

If your door is quite heavy (more than 70 lbs) consider using our pintle hinges, as the pin size will be larger and the strap material will be thicker.

Butterfly hinges, also known as dovetail hinges, are frequently used on corner cupboards, kitchen cabinets, bible boxes, and candle boxes. Our selection offers an attractive assortment of rounded and angular shapes and a choice of sizes. Pintle Strap Hinges

Long, narrow, wrought iron straps for pintle hinges, these were common in New England. The HF-40 straps we keep in stock fit doors approximately 36" wide. These wrought iron strap hinges are suitable for interior or exterior applications.

Cupboard Strap Hinges

Small strap hinges like these are designed for cupboard and cabinet doors. The butts can be jamb mounted or surface mounted. Screws are included for both methods of installation. Choose between strap lengths and patterns. All of these iron strap hinges are hand forged.

Not sure which length to choose? Measure the width of the cabinet door first. Use a 6" long strap on cabinet doors that measure 10"-15" wide and the 8" long strap for cabinets that measure up to 20" wide. Factor in the height of the cabinet door also, of course if it is very tall, you may want to use an 8" even if the door is narrow. These small strap hinges are very strong, made of 1/8" thick material and each strap is 1" wide. If you have closet doors or other interior doors, consider using our longer iron strap hinges before making a final decision.

Rat-Tail Hinges

Used most often on corner cupboards and in kitchens, these wrought iron hinges are simply stunning. The 'flag' is installed on the cabinet door and the 'rat's tail' is secured on the frame that surrounds the cabinet door with the lower screw and the threaded eye. For flush mounted or doors with a 3/8" offset rabbeted edge. These wrought iron hinges are sold per pair.

Stand in front of the door. If the hinges are going to be on the right side, choose RT-R hinges, and if they are going to be on the left side, choose an RT-L hinge.

Blanket Chest Hinges

Beautifully reproduced blanket chest hinges with dovetail ends (sometimes called a fish-tail hinge).

These blanket chest hinges mount on the inside of the lid, and the L-shaped portion wraps around the inside back of the case. They fit perfectly on 3/4" - 7/8" thick wood. We can make these hinges to order in various lengths, patterns and for other wood thicknesses. These hinges are sold per pair.

Door Butt Hinges

Door butt hinges were common in the 19th century, and generally were available in two styles: lift off and regular. Made of cast iron, they were heavy and supportive, but very brittle. Over time, they cracked and today, there are far more broken cast iron hinges than there are intact ones.

We don't want our reproduction door butt hinges to have the same failings as period cast iron hinges, so we do it a little differently. We start with strong, commercial hinges made of modern steel. Next we remove that ugly zinc coating. Then we rework them in a coal forge, where we add beveled edges, texture and a hand worked finish. The blackened oil finish looks well aged and blends with period furnishings very nicely.

Other sizes can be made to order, and special hole placements is available. Lift off butt hinges offer an unusual feature: doors can be easily lifted off the hinge pin.

Large Exterior Door Pintle Strap Hinges

Large, heavy doors need lots of support. The best way to do that is to cut a mortise. Mortised hinges are incredibly strong because they don't rely on both the screws and the mortise to support the weight of a door while it is opening and closing. When installing these large exterior door strap hinges you should always use carriage bolts or lag screws.

Jamb mounted pintles are the strongest type of pintle for wood jambs. They have a steel plate that is mortised into the jamb. They are no different to install than regular butt hinges and they work just as well. If you are working in brick or stone, please call us to discuss driven pintles and other options.

Most doors also require wider, thicker and longer door strap hinges. The hand forged strap hinges shown on this page are 1/4" thick and are suitable for heavy exterior doors. There are two widths and two stock lengths to choose from. Determine the length you need by calculating 2/3 the width of the door. Straps should reach at least 2/3 across. Exceptions can be made, for example dutch doors or hayloft doors can be supported with hinges that only reach 1/2 across.

Our two stock sizes will fit doors from 42" to 48" wide and we can custom make them to fit virtually any door. For the HF-42 simply add or subtract $12.00 per inch per pair to determine the cost. For the HF-43 add or subtract $15.00. If you want either of these hinges without the barrel to use as dummy hinges, deduct $35 from the price.

Dummy Strap Hinges

The straps shown here are "dummy straps" A decorative option with period sensibilities, dummy hinges are not functioning hinges. Instead, they provide the beauty of a strap hinge on doors that are already hinged or don't need hinges, such as overhead garage doors. Add a beautiful period look to your door without removing existing fixtures with these ornamental dummy strap hinges. An old fashioned, wrought iron style comes with a choice of three distinct shapes: heart, bean, and ball & spear.

Dimensions: 3/16" thick x 1-1/2" wide x 24" long.

Cabinet Butt Hinges

As handmade butt hinges for cabinet doors, these mount like any other, and the frame and edge of the door are mortised to fit the thickness of the hinge. They are made from iron that is about the thickness of a dime.

Snipe Hinges

These snipe hinges are made from soft iron and thinned out to delicate proportions. These are very, very early hinges.

Snipe hinges (also known as cotter pin, or staple hinges) are the simplest and probably the earliest hinges used on American furniture. See our instructions with a diagram on how these old fashioned hinges are installed if you need assistance with the installation.

We are very proud of the incredible products our blacksmiths create. Each piece is a museum quality work of art. Each is individually crafted by one of our seven blacksmiths.

We keep as much iron latches and catches as possible in stock at all times; but there are times when demand exceeds the smiths' capacity to keep up. If you are planning a large job, it is always a good idea to notify us of your requirements and time tables.

Many of our latches and catches are available in three decorative patterns: Heart, Bean, and Ball & Spear. When choosing grips, latch sets, and strap hinges, please specify the pattern you prefer.

Suffolk Latch Sets

Year after year, Molly and George forge these incredible latch sets and grips. Latch sets have a handle and thumb piece on one side. The other side has the bar set, like the two drawings on this page. We sell individual latch parts as well.

Latch Instructions

Important - Reverse Bevel: It is important to determine the type of latch set you will need when ordering. The bar and catch will change in accordance with your requirements.

Stand on the side of the door you plan to mount the grip (handle) on. If the door swings away from you, order an HF-14 or HF-17. If the door opens towards you, then order the reverse bevel latch, or the HF-14RB or HF-17RB.

Suffolk Grips

A stylistic and functional complement to Suffolk latches, these hand forged iron grips are ideal for double doors. Thumb pieces are not added to the grip, and the bar set for the latch is installed onto the other side of the door. For an attractive system for opening and locking a door, go with our durable iron Suffolk grips and matching latches.

Hand forged, or wrought iron has classic style, and all grips are modeled after period shapes. For finishing a door or improving an existing fixture, choose from Suffolk grips with heart, bean or ball & spear shapes. Each comes with pyramid head screws for attaching.

Barn Door Cane Bolts

When two doors come together without a post in the center of the opening, a cane bolt is needed. Usually the right door latches against the left door. The left door is 'fixed' shut by a bolt down into the floor or ground, and/or a bolt up above.

Cane bolts are used when two doors close against one another. one door is fixed shut most of the time, often it is the left hand door. The wrought iron construction gives our cane bolts strength and classic, versatile style that blends into and compliments a variety of woods and other materials. Through our selection, choose from left and right cane bolts for improving the functionality of your home's or buildings double doors.

The mounting plate is 13-1/2" long and the bolt has a 4" throw.

Cupboard Latches

When a sturdy design and classic, antique style look, cupboard latches secure smaller doors in place. For effectively keeping doors of food, supplies, or other items closed, these hand forged iron latches are available in a variety of sizes, including standard and mini. Select from durable cupboard latches for right and left hinges.

HF-24 and HF-25 are for cupboards and smaller doors such as pantries and narrow passageways. The HF-24 can only be opened from the outside.

The HF-25 is identical to the HF-24 but has a gracefully curved bar that comes through the door and allows the handle to be lifted (and the door opened) from the inside.
